  • Dr. Smith’s commitment to education started during her residency, which she completed at the University of Utah Affiliated Clinics in 2004. She stayed on as a chief resident for the academic year of 2004-2005. During that year, she was responsible for three times weekly morning report conferences and monthly Morbidity and Mortality conferences with the other chief resident.

Dr. Smith then spent 6 years (2005-2011) in a university-based outpatient clinic where she was the only pediatrician. She served as a preceptor for family medicine residents, medical students and physician assistant students. She was also an ongoing community preceptor for pediatric residents at the University of Utah during their continuity clinic experience – precepting a total of four residents in five years.

In 2010, Dr. Smith returned to the University of Utah part-time as adjunct faculty in the University Pediatrics clinic where her main responsibility was teaching third-year medical students and interns. In 2011, she left the community practice to spend all of her time in the School of Medicine. With this move came the change from adjunct professor to assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics. She has a private practice and spends the rest of her time precepting students in the same-day clinic and residents in their longitudinal outpatient experience (continuity clinic) at University Pediatric Clinic (Clinic 6).

Her non-clinical responsibilities involve being a part of the Student Educational Enterprise – a group responsible for changes in the third year medical student curriculum. Along with members of the Division of Inpatient Medicine, she is responsible for the weekly medical student didactics.

Her clinical interests include well child care, adolescent health care, educating families and maximizing mental health care in the primary care setting. She has assisted with the transition of the Division of General Pediatrics to the EpicCare electronic medical record. She continues to work with the EpicCare team to develop templates and complete quality improvement within the EMR.

Her academic interests are primarily in medical student and resident education and works with the third year medical student clerkship teaching outpatient pediatric topics.

Dr. Smith’s outside hobbies include running, reading, cooking, and spending time with her family. Dr. Smith speaks some medical Spanish and some French.

Dr. Smith is as good as they get. Truly a wonderful pediatrician to my 2 teenage boys. Incredibly professional but still incredibly easy to talk to. I kept thinking my boys would want to switch to a male doctor at some point but my 16 and 18 yo boys are incredibly comfortable with her.

Dr. Smith is the very BEST pediatrician. She works with kids by talking with them and getting on their level. She also takes time to talk with parents and makes sure that everyone understands what is going on and what needs to be done next.
