Personalizing Mental Health Treatment Plans for Children and Teens

Maggie Blau headshot

Meet Maggie Blau, LCSW and youth inpatient social worker at Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI). We asked Maggie a few questions about her work at HMHI and what she enjoys doing when she's not working.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do at HMHI.

Hello! I鈥檓 Maggie and I鈥檓 a licensed clinical social worker at HMHI. I work on the child and adolescent acute inpatient units (3N, 2B, 2A). I have been here for eight years, and I love what I do. I get to be part of treatment teams that consist of a psychiatrist, psychologist and often medical students or others in training.

My main roles are coordinating with the treatment team, parents, schools, outpatient providers, and helping connect to services following hospitalization. I also run process groups and provide individual and family therapy.

"I decided to study social work after some of my own experiences and being on the receiving end of amazing providers. I wanted to help decrease mental health stigma."

Maggie Blau, LCSW

How did you get started in this line of work?

I decided to study social work after some of my own experiences and being on the receiving end of amazing providers. I wanted to help . I studied international social work and did a practicum overseas and then another one in Salt Lake working with refugees. I鈥檇 love to get back to international work someday!

Some of the reasons why I stay at HMHI are partly selfish - I love learning from the other disciplines in mental health. In addition, I have a very supportive group of coworkers, my job allows me to balance work and home life and has helped me be a better parent to my own three kids (ages 14, 10, 9) as well as be a support to family, friends, and community. AND, let鈥檚 be honest, the benefits are hard to beat!

What do you do for fun when you are not working?

Some of my favorite things are spending time with family and friends, napping, nature, reading, chocolate, and Wonder Woman.
