In Memoriam: Natalia Garcia Ramos . We honor her memory and are grateful her family shared their story.
Despite many advancements in cancer care, one aspect often remains a hurdle for patients鈥攑articularly those with a terminal diagnosis鈥攚hich is managing pain. This relentless companion can drastically limit the ability of patients trying to live their remaining days to the fullest.
Natalia Garc铆a was a woman with an infectious smile and boundless optimism. After facing a life-altering diagnosis of cervical cancer at a young age, she was determined to embrace every moment. Unfortunately, excruciating pain began to dominate Natalia鈥檚 days, leaving her bedridden and dependent on others for even the simplest tasks. To control her pain, she relied on sedatives, which severely impacted her quality of life. Despite trying various treatments, from narcotics to steroid injections and nerve blocks, none provided relief.
During this challenging period, Natalia鈥檚 care team introduced her to functional neurosurgeon Ben Shofty, MD, PhD, who specializes in cancer pain treatment. Dr. Shofty and his multidisciplinary team emphasize a personalized approach for patients like Natalia. This often involves integrating pharmacological, interventional, and behavioral methods with the aim of reducing pain.
As part of Natalia鈥檚 holistic plan, Dr. Shofty proposed a percutaneous cordotomy. This minimally invasive surgical procedure relieves pain in patients with terminal cancer by disrupting specific nerve fibers in the spinal cord. After the procedure, Natalia had a swift decrease in pain, allowing her to move around independently for the first time in months and spend precious quality time with her loved ones. 鈥淭he procedure felt like a miracle,鈥 she said afterward. 鈥淚'm forever grateful to Dr. Shofty and the entire team.鈥
A few months after her surgery, Natalia passed away. She spent her final time free from debilitating pain, a testament to the potential of a personalized, multidisciplinary care approach and the resilient spirit of a young woman.

Tras la intervenci贸n, Natalia tuvo una r谩pida disminuci贸n del dolor, lo que le permiti贸 moverse con independencia por primera vez en meses y pasar un tiempo precioso con sus seres queridos. "Sent铆 la intervenci贸n como un milagro", dijo despu茅s. "Estoy eternamente agradecida al Dr. Shofty y a todo el equipo".
Unos meses despu茅s de la cirug铆a, Natalia falleci贸. Pas贸 su 煤ltimo tiempo sin dolor debilitante, un testimonio del potencial de un enfoque de atenci贸n personalizada y multidisciplinar y del esp铆ritu resistente de una joven mujer.
