Dr. Geoff Tabin
The Biosyntrx Humanitarian Committee has chosen Geoff Tabin, MD, co-director of the John A. Moran Eye Center Global Outreach Division and co-founder of the Himalayan Cataract Project, to receive the 2016 Biosyntrx Thornton Humanitarian Award.
Dr. Tabin's mission and core values mirror the Humanitarian Committee's commitment to make a sustainable, positive impact in global quality of life by encouraging lifestyle choices that lower the risk and financial burdens associated with mostly preventable chronic degenerative disease.
Dr. Tabin's great passion for mountaineering resulted in his being the fourth person in the world to conquer the tallest peak on each of the seven continents. His gargantuan passion for summiting the mountain of preventable cataract blindness in the developing world is admittedly audacious, but he has proven it's doable and sustainable.
The Biosyntrx Thornton Humanitarian Award cash award is divided between a deserving individual, the nonprofit organization he or she works with, and again this year, the Hawaiian Eye Foundation.
Dr. Tabin's award and the Hawaiian Eye Foundation Philip M. Corboy Memorial Leadership Award presentations took place on Monday evening, January 18, at the annual Hawaiian Eye Foundation event and at the Hawaiian Eye Meeting on Wednesday, January 20, 2016.
Role at the Moran Eye Center
Supported by donations and volunteer staff, Moran's Global Outreach Division travels monthly to some of the world's most neglected corners, restoring sight to thousands who lack even basic eye care. They are addressing the challenge of global blindness with a sustainable model one that empowers local partners, trains young ophthalmologists in advanced specialties, trains their staffs in clinical management and surgical support, and teaches surgeons to train others in their own countries.
Endowed Chair
Dr. Tabin holds the John E. and Marva M. Warnock Presidential Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology at the John A. Moran Eye Center. He specializes in corneal transplantation, keratoprosthesis (artificial cornea), management of corneal disorders, cataract extraction, LASIK, inflammatory eye diseases, and other complex procedures of the cornea and anterior segment of the eye.
