U of U Researcher Receives International Recognition for Work in Bleeding Disorders

SALT LAKE CITY 鈥揂ndrew S. Weyrich, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and a member of the Molecular Medicine Program at the University of Utah, has recently received two awards recognizing excellence in the fields of thrombosis (the formation of blood clots in the blood vessels) and haemostasis (the stopping of blood circulation).

The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostsasis (ISTH) presented Weyrich with a 鈥淐ontributions to Haemostasis鈥 award. The award recognizes individuals who, in the opinion of their co-workers and peers, have made significant contributions to research and education in the field of blood coagulation. The nominating committee is comprised of the society鈥檚 senior advisory council, 99 distinguished and internationally recognized experts who have previously served as elected members of the ISTH Scientific and Standardization Committee.

In addition, the American Heart Association鈥檚 Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology (ATVB) awarded Weyrich with a 2011 ATVB 鈥淪pecial Recognition Award鈥 in thrombosis. This award is presented to a council member who has made major contributions to the field. Two council members are recognized in the field of thrombosis each year at the American Heart Association鈥檚 Scientific Sessions, the leading cardiovascular meeting in the country, held this year in Orlando, Fla.
