SALT LAKE CITY – Leigh Neumayer, M.D., breast cancer surgeon at Huntsman Cancer Institute and professor of surgery at the University of Utah School of Medicine, has been selected as one of 54 ELAM Fellows for 2013-2014.
The yearlong fellowship, part of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women at Drexel University College of Medicine, prepares senior faculty at medical, dental, and public health schools to assume leadership roles at academic medical centers. This year's class of ELAM fellows will join a community of 800 highly accomplished leaders from around the world, according to Diane Magrane, M.D., director of Drexel's International Center for Executive Leadership in Academics.
"The Fellows' projects not only help them understand the challenges facing academic health centers and the skills a leader must possess to address these challenges, but also often result in concrete, positive changes at their institutions," said Magrane.
Other University of Utah faculty who previously held ELAM fellowships include: Monica L. Vetter, Ph.D., professor and interim chair of the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy; Mary C. Beckerle, Ph.D., professor of biology and executive director of the Huntsman Cancer Institute; Joyce A. Mitchell, Ph.D., professor and chair of biomedical informatics; and Barbara J. Graves, Ph.D., professor and chair of oncological sciences.
ELAM's mission is to increase the number of women in senior leadership positions, and, in so doing, to change the culture of academic health centers to become more inclusive of different perspectives and more responsive to changing social agendas.
