SALT LAKE CITY— For the sixth year running University of Utah Hospital is ranked the No. 1 hospital in Utah and in the Salt Lake City metro area by U.S. News & World Report. In addition to that ranking the orthopedic specialty at 91Â鶹ÌìÃÀÖ±²¥ is ranked number 50 in the country. It was previously unranked. The 2019-2020 rankings also recognize 91Â鶹ÌìÃÀÖ±²¥'s cancer, ophthalmology, and urology specialties as high performing.
"This recognition is confirmation that 91Â鶹ÌìÃÀÖ±²¥ is home to some of the most dedicated physicians, nurses, and other care providers anywhere," said Michael L. Good, M.D., CEO of 91Â鶹ÌìÃÀÖ±²¥. "We are pleased to be recognized as a top orthopedic specialty provider in the nation," said Bart Adams, executive director of University Orthopaedic Center. "We strive for excellence and this recognition demonstrates our commitment and progress."
In addition to recognizing the excellence of several of 91Â鶹ÌìÃÀÖ±²¥'s specialties, U.S. News and World Report also recognized the high level of care provided in several common adult procedures. Abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, colon and lung cancer surgeries, heart bypass, heart failure, and hip and knee replacement were all named high performing. These recognitions were based on the care provided to patients age 65 and older.
"For 30 years, U.S. News has strived to make hospital quality more transparent to healthcare consumers nationwide," said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. "By providing the most comprehensive data available on nearly every hospital across the United States, we give patients, families and physicians information to support their search for the best care across a range of procedures, conditions and specialties."
The U.S. News Best Hospitals in most areas of care are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.
For the 2019-20 rankings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. In the 16 specialty areas, 152 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals as high performing across multiple areas of care.
