match-day-2022
This year marks the first in-person Match Day celebration since 2019 due to COVID-19 restrictions.

On Friday, fourth-year University of Utah School of Medicine students and future doctors will tear open their long-awaited match envelopes to find out where they will live and work for the next few years while completing residency. The medical school class of 2022 has applied for residency programs at hospitals all over the nation, specializing in areas such as pediatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and emergency medicine to name a few.

In the weeks leading up to Match Day, students completed an application process that included ranking their top choices for residency programs. Based on interviews and applications, those programs considered the students who picked them as their top selections. Then, if the preferred program accepts the student, it鈥檚 a match.

Match Day is a very exciting and emotional day for medical students across the country. It鈥檚 the culmination of all their hard work, dedication, and sacrifice while in medical school. Aside from graduation, for many, it all comes down to this day.

Here are some key statistics from the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine Class of 2022:

  • The class has an overall 98.2% match rate
  • Students will be heading to programs in 31 states
  • Students matched into 101 programs in 23 different specialties
  • 40 students will be entering primary care residencies (e.g. internal medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, family medicine)
  • 29 students will perform all or a portion of their residency training in Utah
